It fits better in the magical realism genre, or literary fiction with some light fantasy. The mushrooms are the regular sort, but arrive mysteriously and lead the main character, Song Yan, on a search for who is sending them. Song is an engaging, feminist protagonist.

I love this book. It revolves around matsutake mushrooms: attempts at cultivating them and harvesting them. Not only that, but it examines all the people involved in the process. The book repeats the refrain that through disruption can come beauty: matsutake mushrooms thrive in disturbed forests. Upheaval and change can be a very good thing. There are chapters on forest management, dog breeding, and Japanese culinary enthusiasts. The chapter on Hmong immigrants was one of my favorites.

As the title suggests, this is a classic Gothic tale but instead of decaying ruins in Europe, it features the decaying mansion of English colonizers in Mexico. This detail adds a fun layer to the classic genre. Noemi receives a letter from her cousin, newly married to an Englishman, and asks for help escaping. There are strong Yellow Wallpaper vibes throughout most of the book. Noemi starts to wonder if she is losing her mind while the family acts like everything in their ancestral home is normal. It's not.

I read this book in a day in a half when it came out, and it pulled me out of a deep reading slump. Kingfisher

What Moves the Dead is a retelling of Edgar Allen Poe's Fall of the House of Usher. The story is told from ex-soldier Alex's point of view, who arrives at the Usher's decaying mansion upon receiving news of their friend Madeleine's illness. This novella bridges science fiction and horror with a strong dose of gothic. It had less action than The Last of Us (video game and show) but similar science, if you enjoyed those.

This is the first book in the Sworn Soldier series.

Entangled Life is a fascinating read about the surprisingly robust life of fungi. You may have heard that mycelial networks help trees share nutrients and information through tree root structures, but that is not even half of what fungi can do. This book is written for a lay audience (instead of mycologists), and easy to understand. I listened to the audio book at first, but his soothing voice kept putting me to sleep even though the information was engaging. I highly recommend this book for the nature lovers in your life.
