Mexican Gothic

As the title suggests, this is a classic Gothic tale but instead of decaying ruins in Europe, it features the decaying mansion of English colonizers in Mexico. This detail adds a fun layer to the classic genre. Noemi receives a letter from her cousin, newly married to an Englishman, and asks for help escaping. There are strong Yellow Wallpaper vibes throughout most of the book. Noemi starts to wonder if she is losing her mind while the family acts like everything in their ancestral home is normal. It's not.

I read this book in a day in a half when it came out, and it pulled me out of a deep reading slump. Gothic is one of my favorite genres, and weird mushrooms plus gothic go really well together (like in one of the other fiction picks, What Moves the Dead)
