Midnight Rooms is a historical, gothic romance. Like many gothic romances, the heroine, Orabella is a poor orphan depending on the kindness of her family who can't wait to get rid of her. She is forced into a shape that doesn't fit her, trying to be the perfect society belle like her cousin. Her uncle finds her a husband and sends her off to a remote country manor, crumbling from neglect. Her husband seems caring, but his family is strange. You can probably guess where it goes from here. Coles' descriptions of Orabella's intoxicated state while she tries to understand the fantastical events surrounding her. Her history of abuse influences her to make excuses for her constant mistreatment. This book can be incredibly uncomfortable at times, but it's so incredible when she fully finds herself at the end.
