I could build months and months of selections based entirely off of Japanese cozy books about cats, so it took a long time to decide. Kamogawa Food Detectives is one of my favorite books from the past two years, period. Every chapter is bookended by appearance from Drowsy, the sleepy alley cat who lives outside Kamogawa Diner, and receives pets from all the customers. He does seem to often be in possession of the one brain cell that all orange cats share. His job, like the food detectives in the story, is to help customers heal. Many of the visitors to the diner come seeking food tied to a memory of someone or something that they've lost. This is such a charming book. It will also make you hungry. The only flaw is that it doesn't include recipes in the back, like cozy mysteries sometimes do.
The sequel to this charming book will be available by request.
