I love this book. It revolves around matsutake mushrooms: attempts at cultivating them and harvesting them. Not only that, but it examines all the people involved in the process. The book repeats the refrain that through disruption can come beauty: matsutake mushrooms thrive in disturbed forests. Upheaval and change can be a very good thing. There are chapters on forest management, dog breeding, and Japanese culinary enthusiasts. The chapter on Hmong immigrants was one of my favorites.
