What Moves the Dead By T. Kingfisher

What Moves the Dead is a retelling of Edgar Allen Poe's Fall of the House of Usher. The story is told from ex-soldier Alex's point of view, who arrives at the Usher's decaying mansion upon receiving news of their friend Madeleine's illness. This novella bridges science fiction and horror with a strong dose of gothic. It had less action than The Last of Us (video game and show) but similar science, if you enjoyed those. 

This is the first book in the Sworn Soldier series.
